Consulting for the International Exchange Program for Artists at the Taiwanese Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI)

I am honored and inspired to consult for the International Exchange Program for Artists at the Taiwanese Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), funded by the Taipei City Department of Cultural Affairs, and to work with Lynn Chien, a project manager in this program. I am particularly excited to advise artist Yen Tzu Chang, having connected her with research coordinator Keyvan Sarkhosh and scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics (MPIEA) as part of this exchange. With the short visit at the MPIEA, Yen Tzu Chang aspires to deepen her understanding of the impact of her creations on the audience.

It is such a joy and genuinely intriguing to foster cross-cultural exchanges between artists and scientists! Working with a highly tech-skilled creator like Yen Tzu Chang, who avoids pitfalls of ‚technological exhibitionism‘ whilst fathoming the boundaries of how technology, inherent to her own artwork ( e g Mirage Replica), can shed an empirical scientific light on art and aesthetic experiences is adding a new dimension to her already deep and multifaceted works.

In her talk at MPIEA, titled "Attacks from the Future: The Destruction and Construction of Tech-Art Thinking," Yen Tzu Chang covered questions about the value and transience of technology as part of an artwork.

Yen Tzu Chang is aiming to understand how her work resonates with both scientific and artistic communities. During her time at MPIEA, she hopes to share her unique creative approach to Tech Art and has a chance to gain insights into material and methods of empirical aesthetic research, including the ArtLab. This multi-purpose event space is designed to facilitate behavioral and psychophysiological research into the experience of live presentations of music, literature, and the performing arts.

On a personal note, with my background in ethology and ritual-symbolic communication, and with my artistic explorations on body language at the intersection of the real and virtual world, I am deeply fascinated to gain further insights into research on the coevolution of art and the brain, as well as bioaesthetics!
